Competing against each other for the first
time in this year's RTI race, Galiana
and Valhalla fought a close battle all the way around the Island.
With a tactical late start Valhalla caught up quickly and was
within two boat lengths of Galiana as they closed on the Needles.
Taking
an inside line at the Needles gave Valhalla the lead which she
pulled out to nearly a mile as the two boats short tacked along
the southern shore. Rounding the Bembridge
Ledge buoy Valhalla hoisted her 1.5 oz spinnaker while Galiana
hoisted her 0.6 oz giving her the edge in boat speed. Finally
passing Valhalla off Ryde sands, Galiana held her lead to finish
40 secs ahead of Valhalla (just 9 secs on corrected time)!
